Our History

Emerge is the only independent specialist family violence service, located in the southern metropolitan area of Melbourne.

Established in 1975, it was the second family violence women’s refuge to open in Victoria. At that time, it was run by a group of amazing volunteers, including Constance Smith. When funding was secured Constance was the first paid coordinator of the refuge. In late 2009, the service was re-branded. The rebranding enabled us to expand our programs and services to assist as many women and children as possible.
