As part of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, a previous Emerge client’s story featured in the Herald Sun for the Heart of Melbourne Appeal.
Family violence was the focus of this year’s annual ‘Heart of Melbourne Appeal’. A major contributor to homelessness, family violence often forces vulnerable women and children to flee into uncertainty.
This year’s appeal served to create a better understanding of family violence and its links to homelessness. It sought to remind us that family violence is not a private struggle for some, it is a systemic issue that affects everyone.
As a way of getting this message across to the general public, ‘Leanne’ (real name withheld), a previous Emerge client, spoke of her experience of receiving support from Emerge and moving on to a life free from violence.
A story about much more than just the facts of family violence, Leanne’s story conveyed to Herald Sun readers what many of us in the sector already know; there are positive outcomes for many of the women and children that access domestic or family violence services.
